Changing your address is an essential task that ensures your mail and packages reach you at your new location. The United States Postal Service (USPS) provides a straightforward process for updating your address, but it’s important to understand the steps involved and the necessary contacts. This report outlines how to change your address through USPS and sacramentomovinghub.com highlights other important contacts you may need to inform of your new address.
Step 1: Prepare to Change Your Address
Before initiating the address change, gather necessary information including your old address, new address, and the date you want the change to take effect. You should also decide whether you need to set up a temporary or permanent address change. A temporary change can be set for a specific period, while a permanent change is for an indefinite duration.
Step 2: Use the USPS Online Change of Address Service
The easiest method to change your address is through the USPS website. Here’s how to do it:
- Visit the USPS Change of Address page at www.usps.com/manage/forward-premium.htm.
- Click on “Get Started” and fill out the online form with your personal information.
- Enter your old address, new address, and the date you want the change to start.
- Review the information for accuracy and submit the form. A small fee (around $1.10) is charged for identity verification, which can be paid using a credit or debit card.
Step 3: Change Your Address by Mail
If you prefer to change your address by mail, you can do so by filling out Form 3575, which is available at your local post office or can be downloaded from the USPS website. After completing the form, mail it to the address indicated on the form. Ensure you allow sufficient time for processing, as this method may take longer than the online option.
Step 4: Verify Your Address Change
After submitting your address change, USPS will send you a confirmation to your new address. It’s crucial to verify that your address has been successfully updated. If you do not receive confirmation within a week, contact USPS customer service at 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777) for assistance.
Step 5: Inform Other Important Contacts
In addition to USPS, several other organizations and contacts should be informed of your address change:
- Banks and Financial Institutions: Update your address with your bank, credit card companies, and loan providers to ensure you receive statements and important notices.
- Insurance Companies: Notify your health, auto, and home insurance providers to keep your coverage valid and up to date.
- Utility Companies: Contact your electric, gas, water, and internet service providers to transfer services to your new address.
- Government Agencies: Update your address with the Social Security Administration, IRS, and DMV to ensure your records are current.
- Subscriptions and Memberships: Update your address for any magazines, newsletters, or memberships that you subscribe to.
Conclusion
Changing your address with USPS is a simple process that can be completed online or by mail. However, it is equally important to inform other relevant contacts to ensure a seamless transition to your new address. Taking these steps will help you avoid missed communications and ensure that your mail continues to reach you without interruption.
